How to Calculate Cubic Yards for Any Project
The Universal Volume Formula
A cubic yard is a measure of volume equal to a 3-dimensional cube measuring 3 feet (1 yard) on each side: 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 cubic feet.
Example: For a concrete patio 24 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 4 inches deep:
- Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
- Cubic feet: 24 × 12 × 0.333 = 96 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 96 ÷ 27 = 3.56 cubic yards
- Add 10% waste buffer: 3.56 × 1.10 = 3.92 cubic yards
Recommended Depths by Application
| Application | Recommended Depth |
|---|---|
| Concrete Sidewalks & Walkways | 4 inches (10 cm) |
| Residential Concrete Driveways | 4 to 5 inches (12 cm) |
| Heavy Vehicle / RV Parking Pad | 6 inches (15 cm) |
| Garden Mulch & Bark | 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) |
| Lawn Top-Dressing Soil | 0.25 to 0.5 inches |
| Raised Garden Beds | 8 to 12 inches |
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bags of concrete do I need for 1 cubic yard? ▼
One cubic yard requires forty-five 80-pound bags, sixty 60-pound bags, or ninety 40-pound bags. If your project requires more than 1.5 to 2 cubic yards, ordering ready-mix delivery by truck is typically significantly cheaper and saves hours of intense physical labor.
